Finding a cache and signing the logbook is always a special moment. But solving a puzzle to get there? That makes the experience even more memorable. Inspired by the puzzle caches we see on social media, we wanted to create mystery boxes accessible to everyone.
Not everyone has the tools or skills to create these types of caches, which is why we designed this first box: so that every geocacher, whether beginner or experienced, can add a touch of mystery to their adventures.
A carefully designed box to respect the environment
We chose to use wood to minimize our environmental impact. This first box was designed to house a preform, a container well known to geocachers.
Discreet yet original, it is engraved with subtle symbols that offer clues on how to open it. The design remains deliberately simple to avoid attracting the attention of muggles (non-geocaching players), thus preserving the mystery of the cache.
A beginner-level mechanism for the first version
For this first model, we chose a simple opening mechanism, suitable for beginners and families. Why? Because we too are starting out in the design of puzzle boxes.
The goal is clear: to allow every player, young or old, to experience something different, where it’s not just about finding the cache, but also solving a small challenge to access the logbook.
A testing phase to improve our box
Starting in December, we will place this test box in a forest in Western Switzerland, near our base, to observe its performance in nature. We will regularly (and discreetly!) check its resistance to weather conditions and animals.
This phase will allow us to make improvements: change the type of wood, reinforce certain parts, or consider another protection to ensure optimal durability.
Photos of this box in real-world conditions will be shared here on the blog, as well as on our Instagram account @cache_aventure. However, we ask you not to reveal the location or the opening method in order to preserve the fun of the game.
Limited editions for unique experiences
We have chosen to produce our boxes in small numbered editions. Each version will be limited to around 10 pieces, ensuring that each cache remains unique.
We are already working on ideas for future, more complex boxes, with code systems or puzzles requiring clues spread across multiple caches. This project is still in the planning phase, but we will keep you updated on the progress right here
Your feedback to help us grow
This first box is aimed at families and beginner players, but we hope it will also appeal to more experienced geocachers.
Your feedback will help us improve:
• Did you enjoy the mechanism? Was it clear and fun?
• Did the box seem attractive, sturdy, and original to you?
• What improvements or ideas would you suggest for future models?
We invite you to share your impressions and suggestions directly on our Instagram account @cache_aventure.
Expected availability: End of the first quarter of 2024
Together, let’s create unique caches and push the boundaries of geocaching. Stay connected to follow the progress of our projects on this blog and on our Instagram account @cache_aventure.
