Trackable Items in Geocaching: A Practical Guide

Trackable items, also known as Trackables, add a new dimension to geocaching by giving each discovery a mission. Whether it’s a Travel Bug or a Geocoin, these items are designed to travel from cache to cache around the world, often with a specific goal in mind. Here’s how to properly use and move them.

Finding a Trackable Item

When you find a trackable item in a geocache, the first step is to log it on the Geocaching® app or on Geocaching.com as soon as possible. This allows the community and the item’s owner to know it has been retrieved and is on its way to its next destination.

Check the Mission

Each trackable item often has a mission. To find out its goal, visit the item’s dedicated page by entering its unique tracking code. The mission may be to travel to a specific country, visit a particular location, or simply roam the world. Your role is to place the item in a new geocache that will bring it closer to its destination!

Moving a Trackable Item

Once you’ve checked the mission, drop the trackable item in another geocache during your next adventure. Don’t forget to log this movement on the Geocaching® app or website. This helps document its journey and share the adventures along the way. If you’re unable to move it quickly and must keep it for more than two weeks, it’s a good idea to contact the owner to inform them of the situation.
